What is lyme disease rash?
Lyme disease is spread by the deer tick (species Ixodes scapularis) in the northeastern United States and the western black-legged tick (species lxodes pacificus) in the Pacific Northwest. The lyme disease rash is a red rash that grows in size daily. It is called erythema migrans. Medicines used against Lyme disease include: oral doxycycline (eg Vibramycin) (except in children), amoxicillin (eg Amoxil) or cephalosporin antibiotics are the usual first choices.
Although other conditions can cause similar symptoms, it’s always wise to contact your doctor, especially if your child develops a red-ringed rash, prolonged flu-like symptoms, joint pain or a swollen joint, or facial paralysis. That way your child can get further evaluation and treatment, if necessary, before the disease progresses too far.
