Catalytic converter theft
Vehicles that sit higher off the ground, such as Honda Elements and other SUVs, are more likely targets. Catalytic converter prices have been atracting many thieves. Chicago police busted a citywide catalytic converter theft ring about 14 months ago, but said there currently is no significant occurrence of thefts. Oak Park has seen 19 converter thefts this year, but police spokesman David Powers said that is a lower number than in each of the last two years.
Catalytic converters, which are in just about every modern gasoline powered car utilize precious metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium which have recently skyrocketed to all-time highs. Thieves sneak under the vehicle, cut out the catalytic converter and then sell it on the used auto parts market or even on E-Bay! Used converters can fetch $150 to $200 each or more.
