Aldactone-Potassium-sparing Diuretic

Spironolactone is a diuretic used to treat high blood pressure, edema caused by certain conditions, and low potassium levels and conditions in which the body is making too much of a natural aldosterone. Aldactone tablets contain the active ingredient spironolactone. Patients receiving Aldactone should be advised to avoid potassium supplements and foods containing high levels of potassium, including salt substitutes. This medication should be taken regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Dosage is based on the medical condition and response to therapy. Since this medication increases urine output, it is better to take it early in the day (with breakfast if you are taking a once-daily dose, or with breakfast and lunch if you are taking divided doses).
