About the Tree Leaf

Observing the tree leaf is the easiest way to identify most trees. The shape of the leaf is very important in tree identification. Leafage in the same family will, sometimes, look very similar and have similar common names. In conifers leaf can grow as either scales, single needles, or in groups called fascicles. The shape of the leaf is very important in helping identify a particular tree. In deciduous tree leaves either grow on opposite or alternate sides of a twig. Individual leaves can also be classified as either simple or compound (several to many leaflets per leaf). These leaves are generally speaking broad, flat, and thin. The top surface of the leaf is often very different from the lower surface. Leaf margins may be described as entire, toothed, or lobed; the margin of the leaf can be important in identifying the tree. Leaf arrangement is another feature of leaves that may help you in identifying a tree.
